THE LOWDOWN ON 3×3

  • Now an Olympic Sport – will debut at the Summer Games in Tokyo in Summer 2021

  • Faster-paced version of basketball that appeals to the next generation of fans

3×3 GAME RULES SUMMARY

  • Half court; both teams shoot at the same basket

  • 4 players per team (3 on the court + 1 reserve) and no coaches

  • Tournament format (round robin during pool play)

  • Baskets are worth 1 point from inside the arc and 2 points from outside the arc

  • Alternating possessions after made baskets

  • Ball must be “cleared” after every change of possession

  • 12-second shot clock

  • No intermissions; only one timeout per team

  • The game is over when a team scores 21 points or the 10:00 game clock expires

  • The fastest-paced team sport on the planet

  • Non-stop intensity: both teams have a sense of urgency on every play

  • Live ball after made baskets (no inbound play)

  • Games are short and sweet (Avg. = 18 minutes in real time)

SURVEY RESULTS FROM FIBA 3×3 WORLD TOUR

From events in seven different cities around the world:

  • 65% were under the age of 30

  • 89% said they had “fun” or “a lot of fun” at the event

  • 96% say they would recommend the event to a friend

  • 27% attended the event after noticing it as they were simply “passing by”​

OLYMPICS QUALIFICATION RULES

  • NBA players are unlikely to play 3×3 in the Olympics because the only way to qualify is by competing in a sufficient number of FIBA-endorsed 3×3 tournaments

  • On an Olympic 3×3 team, all four players must have accumulated enough qualification points to be ranked in the Top 50 in their respective countries for 3×3; two of them must be in the Top 10

  • Only tournaments that use all of the official FIBA 3×3 rules count toward Olympic qualification
